Passion-Centered Care

Treating orofacial myology disorders is a passion of Dr. Prather. As a mother of two sons who were born with tethered oral tissues, she understands the unique challenges you face as a parent of a child who lives the same issue.

Lip or tongue tie can make breastfeeding difficult while also causing complications with chewing, swallowing, and speech. If the problem is not corrected early, it can lead to issues with the facial skeletal growth and development, as well as their occlusion and temporomandibular joints. In some cases, it can impact their dental health while also changing their facial esthetics.

With first-hand knowledge from a parent’s perspective, she strives to deliver the comfortable and effective solutions you need to change your child’s life. She is motivated to help you provide the best life possible for your child by correcting the tissue abnormality.

Benefit from Early Intervention

Mother and babyWhen the orofacial muscles and tissues do not develop correctly, it can lead to serious complications that can affect your child’s life in several areas. Although it may only be a small section of skin, it can create big problems as they age.

The average person swallows 500 to 1000 times per day. If the tongue is tied, it can press against the teeth, causing them to spread. This is often referred to tongue thrust, which results from constant pressure on the teeth.

This can make it difficult for the teeth to erupt correctly while also causing an abnormal bite. If the upper and lower teeth do not align properly, this can lead to difficulty biting, chewing, swallowing, and digesting food as your child ages.

When the bite and alignment of your child’s teeth are affected, it can cause cosmetic issues as well, which may leave them feeling insecure about their appearance. Due to the improper oral functions, the muscles can be left weak, resulting in a dull or sluggish look. In some cases, the lips may be left partially opened, giving the chin a knobby look.

When you combine the improper placement of the teeth with weak facial muscles, speech problems are common. It is not unusual for a child to develop a lisp or have difficult pronouncing sounds correctly.

Over time, the poor oral functions can lead to a wide array of additional complications, such as temporomandibular joint disorders, which can cause chronic jaw pain, headaches, and more. In some cases, breathing disorders, like sleep apnea, can also result from the weakened oral muscles.

Thankfully, with early intervention, the potential complications can easily be avoided. Dr. Prather and her team have the solutions you need to correct tissue to restore proper oral functions.

Choose a Qualified Team

InfantAs a parent, nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of your child. As a mother, Dr. Prather understands your expectations when it comes to treating them. To correct oral tissue defect, our team includes a certified therapist, Chelsea Madison, who is also our lead dental hygienist. With Dr. Prather by her side, you can rest assured that your child is in the best of hands.

To treat lip and tongue tie, we embrace the latest technological advancements and techniques to provide safe, comfortable, and effective results when performing the frenectomy.

Soft Tissue Laser

Supported by years of training and experience, Dr. Prather is the only provider in middle Tennessee who is trained to use a soft tissue laser. This provides a less invasive option when compared to a scalpel. In fact, your child will only need a topical anesthetic in most cases—not general anesthesia.

The laser provides precise cutting with pinpoint accuracy. It also cauterizes while it cuts to reduce bleeding and sterilizes the area to lessen the potential for an infection. This method allows for quick recovery that is free from complications.

Intraoral Cameras

To ensure that the procedure is performed effectively and safely, Dr. Prather uses a special magnification loupe and an LED headlamp to clearly see the treatment area. In addition, she also uses an intraoral camera to have highly detailed images of the treatment site both before and after the procedure to monitor the healing process. These images can also be shared with your pediatrician, lactation consultation, or another healthcare professional to promote your child’s complete treatment.

Complimentary Revisions

If there is ever a time when you are concerned after the treatment, Dr. Prather offers complimentary revisions for the first year. She strives to ensure that your child maintains their optimal oral health and quality of life.
